Stopping Methane emissions from orphaned oil and gas wells
METHANE STOP
Why Stop Methane?
Methane traps 80x as much heat as CO2
Methane is a greenhouse gas (GHG) and traps about 80 times as much heat as CO2 in its first 20 years in the atmosphere and is responsible for a significant portion of the warming that has occurred over the past century. One of the main sources of methane emissions include natural gas and oil production.
Reducing methane emissions is an important part of efforts to mitigate climate change, as it can help to slow the rate of warming and limit its impacts. At Methane Stop, we are reducing Methane emissions by targeting inactive and orphaned wells that need to be plugged and abandoned.
What is an Orphaned or Abandond well?
There are currently more than 2 million orphaned wells in the US. An orphaned oil and gas wells has been abandoned by their owners, often without proper plugging and abandonment. These wells may pose a risk to the environment and public safety, as they can leak oil, gas, or other fluids into the surrounding environment and potentially contaminate groundwater or cause other environmental damage such as emitting methane.
Orphaned wells are typically the responsibility of the government or regulatory agency in the jurisdiction where they are located. At Methane Stop, we are working with the Texas Railroad Commission and certified P&A companies to target and cap these wells.
This continues to be an area of growing concern, particularly in areas with a long history of oil and gas production. Efforts are underway to address this issue, including through funding programs to support well remediation and improved regulations to ensure that well owners are held accountable for the costs of plugging and abandoning their wells.
Impact of Methane Stop
An uneconomic limit for a gas well is around 40 mcfpd. If we plug only 10 wells that is equivalent to 8,042 MTCO2e or:
Follow along with the EPA's link below. Uneconomic limit of 40 mcfpd is 14,600 mcf of natural gas. The impact of 50 or 100 or 1000 wells plugged!
